Sometimes conserving energy is as simple as flipping a switch. Here are some easy ways to reduce the energy you use around the house.

Heating and Cooling

  • Close windows, doors and curtains during the day to block heat from coming in.
  • Raising the temperature on your thermostat by five degrees for eight hours can reduce your cooling cost.
  • Only run exhaust fans when getting rid of odors.
  • Make sure window air conditioning unit fits correctly.
  • Consider using fans instead.

Kitchen

  • To avoid using your oven and other appliances, use your outdoor grill when able.
  • When making smaller meals, use microwave, toaster, or crockpot.
  • Keep the oven door shut when in use.
  • Keep freezer stocked. A full freezer is more efficient than an empty one.
  • Load the dishwasher properly and only run full loads.
  • Use the air-drying option or stop the dishwasher when the dry cycle begins to save energy.

Cleaning

  • Only run washing machine when it is full. Change loads while dryer is still warm.
  • Clean out dryer lint after every use.
  • Sponge mops use less water than string mops. Also use a bucket when moping instead of running water.

Around your home

  • Look out for and repair leaky faucets.
  • Check for loose gasket that could be leaking cool air
  •  Turn off the lights when leaving a room.
  • Use LED lights.
  • Turn off electronics when not being used.

Saving water

  • Take shorter showers. Also save money and water by showering instead of bathing.
  • Turn off water when brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Use a nozzle to shut off or adjust your hose when outdoors.
  • Mowing your lawn at a higher mower setting will keep your lawn more hydrated.
  • Install rain barrels to catch storm water to use for outdoor activities.

By incorporating these practices into our daily lives, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future while also saving money. Find out how to lower your energy bill work together towards a greener, more energy efficient world here!
