Halloween can be a spooktacular good time, but it can also be scary if you’re not practicing safety. Sadly, amidst the candy and fun of parties and trick-or-treating, Halloween is one of the most dangerous days of the year for children. On average, there are over two times as many child pedestrian deaths compared to every other day of the year, not to mention other less obvious dangers.
AEP Energy believes in the concept of Zero Harm, and that every accident is preventable. Let’s go over some simple steps to help you and your little goblin(s) have a safe and fun Halloween this year!
All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.
Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags so children can be seen at night.
Take flashlights with fresh batteries and distribute glow sticks and necklaces to help light the way.
A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.
Keep walkways clear and replace burned-out bulbs with energy-efficient light bulbs. Energy-efficient bulbs typically use about 25-80% less energy than traditional incandescents and can last 3-25 times longer!
Make sure your cell phone is charged prior to walking your route.
Look both ways and cross the street at corners. Use streetlights and crosswalks when they are available.
Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
Watch out for vehicles backing out of driveways.
If older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.
Agree on a specific time children should return home.
Instruct children to never to enter a stranger’s home or car and to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.
Be sure to have an adult check all candy and treats prior to consumption.
Have a ghoulishly good time this Halloween season and remember to make safety a priority!
